TAD Informal Settlements

Tarrant County property tax protests are centered on the informal appeal. While others such as Travis County need formal appeals to figure out their inflated property values, most of the county’s tax problems can be resolved via an appraisal hearing. 224,520 of these appeals were filed in 2024, the highest the county has ever seen. Over the past decade, the number of appeals filed in the county has increased by 1318.39%.

This thunderous rise is keyed off of protests centered on the single family home. 178,137 single family appeals were filed in 2024, 79.34% of all appeals. While informal appeals are traditionally the domain of the single family home, homeowners have really opened up the lead on commercial properties and related real estate. 46,380 businesses appealed in 2024, which is about standard for commercial properties in Tarrant County over the last few years.

Taxpayers were able to get reduction settlements with relative ease, which should encourage others to follow with their own informal appeals in the coming years.
